With at least 4 months of regular snowfall each year, Japan is one of the most reliable snow and ski destinations in the world. From November to April, almost every day is powder day, with regular snowfalls – up to 50cm – leaving fresh runs at all ski fields.

Snow sport activities aren’t automatically covered with a standard travel insurance policy.

If you're participating in snow sports while in Japan, consider purchasing an optional Snow Pack for an additional premium when you buy an Allianz Comprehensive or Multi-trip plan1,4

Popular adventure activities in Japan include hiking and trekking on Mt. Fuji and ancient trails, or water sports like rafting, kayaking, and diving in Okinawa and other coastal areas.

Allianz Travel Insurance automatically covers adventure activities like hiking (altitudes up to 3,000 metres) and surface water sports (in rapids graded I to III or up to 2 nautical miles from land)1.

However, if you plan to get more adventurous, you should consider purchasing an Adventure Pack as an optional add-on to our Comprehensive and Multi-trip plans1,4

For a full list of automatically included sports and activities, as well as what is covered by the Adventure Pack, read the Policy Wording.

Japan is a very safe country for travellers. It’s a country obsessed with cleanliness, the tap water is safe to drink and food hygiene standards are very high.

Your biggest risk is the natural disasters that sometimes hit Japan like typhoons, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and earthquakes. The typhoon season runs from approximately May to November.

Always refer to SafeTravel for current travel alerts affecting Japan before you buy your travel insurance policy, as well as before you leave New Zealand, and during your stay.

Japan has one of the most efficient public transport systems in the world, especially in metropolitan areas. If a train says it is going to depart at 10:28 am, it will leave precisely at 10:28 am and zero seconds. But if you miss it, don’t worry, there will be another one arriving on time very soon. You’ll find that the buses, metros and bullet trains will take you almost anywhere that you want to go, on time, every time.

Even though Japan is a very safe country for travellers, travelling always comes with risks. Travel insurance can cover unforeseen events that may disrupt or affect your trip, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, or other unexpected incidents.

You can compare Allianz Travel Insurance plans to determine which product best suits your needs.

Allianz Travel Insurance Comprehensive and Multi-trip plans can cover you for trip cancellation.

If you’re already travelling in Japan and a natural disaster occurs, you may be covered for travel delays, lost prepaid trip expenses and additional costs like meals, accommodation and transportation. If you are injured during a natural disaster while you’re in Japan, you may be covered for overseas emergency assistance and medical and hospital expenses.

Always read the Policy Wording for full information.

Allianz Travel Insurance policies automatically include some activities. For adventure activities like riding a moped, zip lining or abseiling, consider buying an Adventure Pack for an additional premium1,4.

If you’re skiing or snowboarding in Japan, consider adding an optional Snow Pack to your Comprehensive or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance policy for an additional premium1,4.

Read the Policy Wording for a full list of sports and activities automatically included, and what activities the Adventure Pack is designed to cover.

Generally, food is safe - and tasty - in Japan. However, if you do happen to get food poisoning and need emergency medical attention, this may be covered under an Allianz Basic, Comprehensive or Multi-trip plan. If your illness means you miss out on connecting flights or other pre-booked transportation, or you have to stay in Japan for longer, depending on your level of cover, your policy may cover additional accommodation and expenses involved in changing flights.

It’s your choice when you buy travel insurance. When considering travel insurance, keep in mind:

  • You can buy our travel insurance up to 12 months in advance.
  • You must purchase your policy before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in New Zealand to begin travel.
  • Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued.

Consider buying Allianz Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all your trip as you may be covered for some events before you depart.
