It pays to play it safe when it comes to travel insurance, especially for the adventurous at heart. 

If you’re injured overseas medical treatment can be expensive, so it is worth considering what activities you have planned and checking if they're covered before you go.

Our Adventure Pack is designed to cover a range of more adventurous activities and sports, which are not automatically covered by a standard policy1.

 

It's important to note that coverage and benefits limits can vary depending on the policy you choose. Therefore, it's important for you to consider the Policy Wording before making any decisions about your travel insurance.

This optional pack is designed to cover a range of more adventurous sports and activities not automatically covered in your policy. For a list of what sports and activities are automatically covered, refer to the activities listed in the Policy Wording. You must be under 75 years at the time of issue of your Certificate of Insurance to buy this optional pack. 

Covered activities

Land activities

  • Outdoor rock climbing (with ropes and appropriate safety gear)
  • Abseiling
  • Caving/potholing
  • Flying fox/zip lining
  • Tandem parachuting, tandem sky diving, tandem hang gliding, tandem gliding and tandem paragliding (but you must be in tandem with a licensed instructor for these activities)
  • Hiking, trekking, or tramping, peaking at altitudes from 3,000 metres up to 6,000 metres, where specialist climbing equipment is not required
  • Expeditions to or on the Kokoda Track/Trail
  • Battle re-enactment (but not with firearms)

Motorised activities

Water activities

  • Surface water activities in rivers or rapids graded IV or V under the International Scale of River Difficulty
  • Cave/river tubing
  • Deep sea fishing
  • Sailing from 11 to 15 nautical miles from land
  • Diving underwater using an artificial breathing apparatus at a depth no greater than 30 metres (to be covered for this activity, you must hold an open water diving licence recognised in New Zealand or dive with an instructor licensed for these activities. Please note, restrictions apply, refer to General Exclusions, ‘Activities’ and ‘Diving alone’, in the Policy Wording)

Sport activities

  • contact sports (including any form of rugby, Australian Rules football or American football)
  • martial arts
  • shooting (moving target—e.g. clay pigeon), but not hunting

Animal activities

  • animal conservation and handling (under appropriate supervision)

 

Please note: Adventure Packs have an additional excess of $500, which cannot be changed or removed. Overseas Medical and Hospital Expenses or Cancellation claims arising from your participation in adventure activities will incur a $500 excess in addition to your chosen base excess.

  • Permanent Disability or Personal Liability claims that arise from your participation in adventure activities
  • Competing in a professional capacity

important info

Even if you add an Adventure Pack, you will only be covered while riding on a motorcycle, moped, motorised scooter or quad bike if:

  • you hold the appropriate class of licence (excluding learners licences) in New Zealand for the vehicle you’re driving, or a licence valid for the country you’re riding in, if your New Zealand licence is not recognised in that country;
  • when you’re riding as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle, moped or motorised scooter, the driver holds a licence valid for that vehicle and for the country it’s being ridden in. However, this restriction will not apply if it is reasonable that you did not know that the driver was not licensed and no exclusion applies to the circumstances of your claim;
  • you’re the driver of a quad bike and you’re not carrying a pillion passenger – there’s also no cover if you ride as a pillion passenger on a quad bike;
  • you wear an appropriate safety helmet; and
  • you’re not participating in any race or riding a motorcycle, moped, motorised scooter or quad bike in a professional capacity.

 Allianz ComprehensiveMulti-Trip and Domestic Travel Insurance plans provide the option to add an Adventure Pack for an additional premium1. When you purchase your travel insurance policy online, simply click to add the adventure pack to your policy.  

Allianz Travel Insurance automatically covers you to participate in some activities. This can include activities like:

  • aqua zorbing
  • archery
  • bicycling (but not bicycle motorcross (BMX) or downhill mountain biking)
  • bungee jumping
  • camel, donkey or elephant riding (under appropriate supervision)
  • diving underwater at a depth no greater than 10 metres
  • fishing
  • fruit picking that does not involve the use of machinery
  • go-karting
  • golf
  • gym activities or gymnastics
  • horse riding
  • ice skating on a rink 
  • leisure activities - sight-seeing, picnics, photography and museum or art gallery visits
  • paintball (with eye protection)
  • racquet and ball sports not involving physical contact
  • regulated or licensed ballooning
  • river cruising
  • rockwall climbing (under appropriate supervision)
  • safari (under appropriate supervision) but not hunting
  • sailing up to 10 nautical miles from land
  • shark cage diving (subject to diving restrictions listed above)
  • shooting (fixed target only)
  • skateboarding, roller skating, inline skating (but not including vert skating or acrobatics)
  • snorkelling at a depth no greater than 10 metres
  • soccer
  • surface water activities in rivers or rapids graded I, II or III under the International Scale of River Difficulty, or lakes or canals
  • swimming and other surface water activities (other than sailing) up to 2 nautical miles off any land mass
  • track and field athletics
  • walking, hiking, trekking or tramping, peaking at altitudes up to 3,000 metres where specialist climbing equipment is not required (excluding expeditions to or on the Kokoda Track/Trail)

If your travel arrangements include an activity NOT listed in this section, you should consider purchasing our optional Adventure Pack for an additional premium1.

Permanent Disability or Personal Liability claims that arise from your participation in adventure activities are not covered. 

Please also note that even if you purchase the Adventure Pack, you will only be covered while riding on a motorcycle, moped, motorised scooter, or quad bike if: 

  • you hold the appropriate class of license (excluding learner’s licenses) in New Zealand for the vehicle you're driving, or a license valid for the country you're riding in, if your New Zealand license is not recognised in that country;

  • you're not participating in any race or riding a motorcycle, moped, motorised scooter, or quad bike in a professional capacity.

To be eligible to purchase an Adventure Pack you must be under 75 years at the time your policy is issued. An Adventure Pack is only available for purchase with a Comprehensive, Multi-Trip or Domestic plan.

An Adventure Pack has an additional excess of $500 in addition to your chosen base excess, which can't be changed or removed. This excess is applicable where a claim is made under Overseas Medical and Hospital Expenses or Cancellation benefits, and the claim arises from your participation in an adventure activity.

For example:

If you selected $200 as your base excess and have added the adventure pack to your policy, you'll pay a total of $700 if your claim arises from an adventure activity.
