It's important to note that coverage and benefits limits can vary depending on the plan you choose. Therefore, it's important for you to consider the Policy Wording before making any decisions about your travel insurance.   

Conditions apply

  1. Terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions apply, and these are set out in the Policy Wording.
  2. You don't have cover for Overseas Emergency Assistance or Overseas Medical & Hospital Expenses while travelling in New Zealand.
  3. You only have cover for these benefits if the relevant pack has been bought.
  4. Sub-lmiits apply. Refer to the Optional Covers – Cruise Pack and Snow Pack Policy Benefits section in the Policy Wording for full details.
  5. To purchase an Adventure Pack or Snow Pack, You must be aged under 75 years at the time Your Certificate of Insurance is issued.
  6. Cancellation cover is only available on Comprehensive, Domestic and Multi-Trip Plans. Refer to Cancellation and General Exclusions sections of the Policy Wording for full details.

Allianz Travel Insurance for backpackers can cover you for a range of unexpected events that could happen when travelling overseas or in New Zealand. Such as emergency medical assistance if you become ill or injured when overseas, including evacuation of needed.

Other incidents that travel insurance may cover include unexpected delays and cancellations, lost luggage and personal liability.

We have Basic, Comprehensive,  Multi-trip and Domestic plans to choose from, each with varying levels of cover and benefits. 

To decide which plan best suits your needs, you can  compare Allianz Travel Insurance plans.

When purchasing a policy, you can either list all the countries you intend to visit or select a region.

Regions available to select are:

  • Americas
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Europe
  • Pacific
  • New Zealand 
  • Australia
  • Worldwide

If you’re travelling to a few regions or you are unsure where you will travel to, it may be better to simply choose ‘Worldwide’ as the region. 

Note: ‘Worldwide’ may be more expensive in some instances because it’s designed to cover the maximum destinations – please explore all available options before making your final decision.

The cost of travel insurance for backpackers varies depending on several factors, such as:

  • the duration of your trip
  • your destination(s)
  • whether you purchase a single, duo or family policy
  • your age
  • any pre-existing medical conditions you have
  • which plan you choose

You can choose to adjust your excess amount or the cancellation amount on applicable plans, which will change your premium slightly.

Allianz Travel Insurance policies automatically include some activities. For adventure activities like riding a moped, zip lining or abseiling, consider buying an Adventure Pack to add to your Comprehensive or Multi-trip plan.

If you’re skiing or snowboarding on your backpacking holiday, consider adding a Snow Pack to your Comprehensive or Multi-trip plan for an additional premium.

A general exclusion will apply to your policy and there will be no cover for any claims if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs to the point where your physical abilities, mental function or judgement are impaired. This general exclusion doesn’t apply if the drug is prescribed to you by a medical adviser and taken in accordance with their instructions.
