Home to over 1,000 species of fish and hundreds of different corals, Fiji provides a spectacular view for the underwater explorer. Our Travel Insurance plans automatically cover activities like snorkelling (at a depth no greater than 10 metres) and surfing (up to 2 nautical miles off any land mass)1

If your trip to Fiji involves scuba diving or more adventurous water activities, consider purchasing an Adventure Pack as an optional add-on to our Comprehensive and Multi-trip plans1. For a full list of automatically included sports and activities, as well as what is covered by the Adventure Pack, read the Policy Wording.

One of the best ways to explore the 322 islands that make up the Fijian Archipelago is by cruise. If you are planning a cruise trip to Fiji, for an additional premium you have the option to add a Cruise Pack to your Comprehensive or Multi-trip plan1. Our cruise pack can cover things like medical expenses on board, cancellation of pre-paid shore excursions, loss and damage to formal wear and more1.

Overall, Fiji is a safe destination and very welcoming to tourists. However, be aware that the tropical climate breeds mosquitoes that carry diseases and the water activities may not have the same safety standards that you are used to. Thefts, scams and begging can also occur in some of the larger cities.

The medical facilities in Fiji are not as well equipped as in New Zealand, especially when you start to head out to outlying islands or remote villages. If you do become seriously ill in Fiji, you may need to be treated at a private hospital or medically evacuated back home for treatment.

Always refer to SafeTravel for current travel alerts for Fiji before you buy your travel insurance policy, as well as before you leave New Zealand, and during your stay.

Fiji is a beautiful tropical paradise, a cross between a place to laze by the beach all day and an adventure destination with many exciting water sport activities on offer. Here’s our top pick for the best mix of relaxation and thrills.

In the shadows of the Sleeping Giant (a mountain shaped like a sleeping man) you’ll find a garden that is home to the largest collection of orchids in Fiji - over 2,000 varieties.

Created by the late American actor Raymond Burr, the garden is full of Fiji’s beautiful vegetation and greenery along with fishponds, boardwalks and cool shady pathways. This garden is guaranteed to take your breath away, so take a picnic, relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

More than just sand, the Sigatoka sand dunes cover an impressive 650 hectares. Home to over 22 species of birds, lizards, geckos and fruit bats with views of the Sigatoka River. You can hike through the area on one or two hour trails. The sand dunes can get very hot, so avoid the midday heat and drink plenty of water. The hike also crosses an ancient burial site discovered in the late 1980s and dated back to around 2,600 years old. Fifty graves were uncovered along with stone tools, pottery and other cultural remnants.

Visit Tavoro waterfalls on Taveuni to swim in the natural swimming pools beneath the falls. Surrounded by ridiculously thick, green jungles - the waterfalls are about a 3-hour return hike from the visitor centre. The hike has panoramic views, and you’ll also experience the sights and sounds of the jungle. You may spot a banded Iguana or the critically endangered monkey-faced bat.

Fijian food is heavily influenced by the ocean, the locally grown produce and the Polynesian and Indian culture of the country. For a unique dining experience, try:

  • Kokoda - Raw pieces of fish marinated in coconut cream, lime, onions and tomatoes.
  • Taro - A heavy potato-like vegetable with a purple hue.
  • Duruka - The unopened flower of a cane shoot, cooked in coconut milk to make a curry.

If you’re up for it, cooking classes are a great way to immerse yourself in local culture. Classes are widely available throughout Fiji, either offered in resorts or local villages.

White water rafting delivers an epic view of Fiji - remote highland villages, gorges, mountains and fast-moving rapids. No previous experience is required. Try rafting at the Upper Navua River, surrounded by lush rainforest and black volcanic walls, fed by many waterfalls and full of challenging rapids. Or hit up the Luva River where most tours also take you into a traditional kava ceremony on the way.

The Fijian people are some of the friendliest and most inviting in the world. They are taught at a young age that family and friends are the most important thing and are eager to share their customs and traditions. Some good ways to interact are to attend a Meke or traditional performance where the locals share their stories, history and legends through music and dance. Or visit during either the Hibiscus or Bula festivals, where locals gather with parades, marching bands, dancing and beauty pageants.

While purchasing  travel insurance for Fiji is not compulsory, accidents can happen. You can get sick or injured. Or weather events can unexpectedly change your plans. Losses, damage, and theft can leave you out of pocket. It’s worth noting that many medical facilities in Fiji are not at a high standard. If you get sick or injured, you may need to be evacuated home to New Zealand. These costs can be expensive.

The cost (also known as a premium) of your travel insurance policy for Fiji will vary depending on:

  • the duration of your trip
  • whether you purchase a single, duo or family policy
  • your age
  • any pre-existing medical conditions you have
  • which plan you select (i.e. BasicComprehensive or Multi-trip) and other variables

You can choose to adjust your excess amount or the cancellation amount on applicable plans, which will change your premium slightly.

You can refer to the “Your insurance premium” section of the Policy Wording for more information.

Travelling to Fiji during pregnancy can carry risks. Mosquito-borne diseases like Zika and Dengue Fever may cause birth defects and complications.

Allianz provides travel insurance for a single, uncomplicated pregnancy up to 24 weeks. Your Policy will automatically provide cover for pregnancy related claims arising from an unforeseen event, as long as:

  • the event occurred prior to the 24th week of Your pregnancy; and
  • it is not something excluded under the Policy.

For more information you can read the section ‘Travel during pregnancy’ in the Policy Wording.

If you need an ambulance in Fiji, call 911. Once you reach the hospital you may be asked to provide your travel insurance policy before you’re treated. Keep a copy of your certificate of insurance on your phone or in your day bag.

Allianz Travel Insurance provides coverage for overseas medical and hospital expenses, which can include treatment for illnesses. However, coverage is subject to terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions, and these are set out in the Policy Wording. It is important to review the Policy Wording to understand the specifics of what is covered.
