beach

Bali is world-famous for its surfing, with thousands of tourists flocking to the legendary beach breaks and reefs each year.

Allianz Travel Insurance automatically covers adventure activities like surfing (up to 2 nautical miles off any land mass) and snorkelling (at a depth no greater than 10 metres)1.

However, if you plan to be more adventurous, you should consider purchasing an Adventure Pack as an  optional add-on to our Comprehensive and Multi-trip plans1

For a full list of automatically included sports and activities, as well as what is covered by the Adventure Pack, read the Policy Wording.

riding on mopeds

Riding motorcycles, motorised scooters and mopeds aren’t activities automatically covered.

If you plan to ride motorcycles, mopeds, motorised scooters or quad bikes as either the driver or pillion passenger in Bali, you might want to consider buying an Adventure Pack for an additional premium, which is an optional add-on for our Comprehensive and Multi-Trip plans1.

The Adventure Pack is designed to cover you while riding on a motorcycle, moped, motorised scooter or quad bike1,4 if you meet the following conditions:

  • You hold the appropriate class of licence (excluding learners licences) in New Zealand for the vehicle you’re driving, or if your New Zealand licence isn’t recognised in that country – a licence valid for the country you’re riding in.
  • When you’re riding as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle, moped or motorised scooter, the driver holds a licence valid for that vehicle and for the country it’s being ridden in.
  • You’re the driver of a quad bike and you’re not carrying a pillion passenger. Note that you’re not covered if you ride as a pillion passenger on a quad bike.
  • You always wear an appropriate safety helmet.
  • You aren’t racing or riding a motorcycle, moped, motorised scooter or quad bike in a professional capacity.

The main categories for travel insurance claims in Bali are luggage and personal effects, medical and hospital expenses, pickpocketing, cancellation fees, and lost deposits.

Some useful travel safety tips for Bali include:

  • Consult your local doctor about any vaccinations you or your family may require before travelling to Bali.
  • Always keep your passport in a safe place and report a lost or stolen passport to the New Zealand Embassy as soon as possible.
  • Opportunistic theft and pickpocketing occur in Bali, particularly around busy tourist destinations. Thieves on motorcycles may snatch handbags or backpacks from pedestrians. Keep your valuables close to your body or in the hotel room if possible.
  • Credit card and ATM fraud can occur in Bali. Try to use ATMs in secure locations like banks, shops, or malls, and keep an eye on your transaction history and bank statements.
  • Only use official taxi companies that can be booked by phone or from stands at major hotels or inside airports.
  • Balinese food is exotic, full of flavour, and unique. Eating the local food will be one of the highlights of your visit to Bali. Just be wary of eating food that appears raw or undercooked to avoid ‘Bali Belly.’
  • Avoid spirits and spirit-based drinks like cocktails, as they can contain methanol, which is poisonous. Opt for sealed drinks (such as bottled beer) where possible. Choose reputable licensed premises and avoid homemade alcoholic drinks.
  • Keep a close eye on your drink or ask a friend to watch it for you if you leave it unattended, to protect against drink spiking.
  • Stay out of the sun in the middle of the day to avoid heatstroke and use sunscreen to prevent sunburn.
  • As well as sun protection, covering up with long, loose-fitting clothing has the added benefit of protecting against insect bites that can carry illnesses like dengue fever. You may want to use insect repellent as well.

Always refer to SafeTravel for current travel alerts affecting Bali before you buy your travel insurance policy, as well as before you leave New Zealand, and during your stay.

Bali can be visited throughout the year. However, the most popular time to holiday in Bali is during the dry season, which occurs from around May to October. Peak tourist season is in the months of July and August.
  • Ubud Monkey Forest – A visit to Bali is not complete without an encounter with a monkey. These cute primates have a well-earned reputation for stealing, so make sure you secure all your items as they are guaranteed to get very hands-on.
  • Tegalalang Rice Terraces – This UNESCO World Heritage site comprises a series of cascading rice fields set amongst lush greenery. Make sure you visit the nearby Bali Pulina plantation. After exploring the rice fields, take in the view from the mountain-edge jungle swings or zip lines.
  • Neka Art Museum – This museum is an excellent introduction to Balinese art. It was founded in 1976 by Suteja Neka, a private collector of art and the son of a wood carver. Visitors can enjoy hands-on workshops and Balinese painting classes.
  • Tanah Lot Temple – Meaning “Land in the Sea,” this iconic Balinese temple is set on the rocks and surrounded by the sea, so it is only accessible by foot at low tide.
  • Sekumpul Waterfall – One of the most breathtaking natural wonders in Bali, these towering waterfalls are magical. Allow a full day to experience these falls; it is a 66 km drive from Ubud and then a 75-minute trek through the awe-inspiring jungle.

If you plan to ride motorcycles, mopeds, motorised scooters, or quad bikes as either the driver or pillion passenger in Bali, consider purchasing an Adventure Pack for an additional premium, which is an optional add-on to our Comprehensive and Multi-Trip plans1,4.

Even if you purchase an Adventure Pack you will only be covered if:

  • You hold the appropriate class of licence (excluding learner's licences) in New Zealand for the vehicle you are driving, or if your New Zealand licence is not recognised in that country – a licence valid for the country you are riding in.
  • When you are riding as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle, moped or motorised scooter, the driver holds a licence valid for that vehicle and for the country it is being ridden in.
  • You are the driver of a quad bike, and you are not carrying a pillion passenger. Note that you are not covered if you ride as a pillion passenger on a quad bike.
  • You wear an appropriate safety helmet at all times.
  • You are not racing or riding a motorcycle, moped, motorised scooter, or quad bike in a professional capacity.

If you submit a claim that arises directly or indirectly from, or is in any way connected with you being under the influence of any intoxicating liquor, substance, or drug (except a drug prescribed to you by a medical adviser and taken in accordance with their instructions) you will not be covered.

Your journey must start and end in New Zealand. Allianz Travel Insurance policies for Bali must be purchased before you begin your trip.
