Allianz Travel Insurance Comprehensive and Multi-trip plans automatically cover the Rental Vehicle Excess you would be liable to pay in the event of an accident or theft.

cruising

Australia's coastline is some of the most beautiful in the world, so it makes perfect sense to explore Australia by sea.

If you are planning a cruise trip in Australia, for an additional premium you have the option to add a Cruise Pack to your Comprehensive or Multi-trip plan1.

Our cruise pack can cover things like medical expenses on board, cancellation of pre-paid shore excursions, loss and damage to formal wear and more1.

The most common travel insurance claim payout for New Zealanders visiting Australia is for medical reasons.

A huge misconception for Kiwis is that if you get hurt or injured while in Australia, the Australian Health System will pay for your medical bills.

New Zealanders are only covered for urgent or necessary care as a public patient in a public hospital. While Kiwis are entitled to some prescriptions at a cheaper rate, not all prescriptions are subsidised.

If get sick or are injured on your holiday in Australia, you could expect to pay hundreds, or even thousands on medical bills and associated costs - such as certain medications, flight upgrades and unused hotel accommodation.

This is one of the reasons why you should consider a travel insurance policy for your trip to Australia.

Some useful travel safety tips for Australia include:

  • Only swim between the red and yellow flags at beaches patrolled by Surf Lifesavers. Never swim alone, at night or under the influence of alcohol.
  • Stay out of the sun in the middle of the day to avoid heatstroke and use sunscreen to prevent sunburn.
  • If you are driving in remote areas of Australia, there is often long distances between towns and facilities, so it is important to plan rest stops and fuel refills before setting off.
  • Australia is home to many dangerous animals, such as crocodiles, sharks, snakes, and spiders. Always follow advisory signs and do not approach animals in the wild.
  • Avoid the temptation to hitchhike; there are plenty of safe public transportation options available in Australia.
  • Safely enjoy bushwalking and hiking in Australia's bushland by:
  • Only walk on marked trails and stick to the designated path.
  • Take plenty of water and food with you.
  • Wear appropriate clothing, preferably loose fitting, and comfortable footwear.
  • Make sure someone knows where you are going.
Always refer to SafeTravel for current travel alerts affecting Australia before you buy your travel insurance policy, as well as before you leave New Zealand, and during your stay.

If you are travelling overseas, even to countries like Australia, travel insurance is an important consideration. It is designed to cover you for any unexpected medical bills or hospitalisation, the replacement costs of lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings, delays and cancellations, and many other unfortunate circumstances.

Allianz Travel Insurance automatically covers several adventure activities, such as surface water activities up to 2 nautical miles off a landmass. Diving to a depth of 10 metres is also covered. You can refer to the Policy Wording to find a list of activities that are automatically covered. If your activity is not covered, you may be eligible to purchase an optional Adventure Pack to add to your Comprehensive or Multi-trip plan.

Your journey must start and end in New Zealand. Allianz Travel Insurance policies for Australia must be purchased before you leave your home in New Zealand.

Reciprocal health agreements only cover basic public healthcare. Travel insurance offers much more, including cover for trip cancellations, lost luggage, emergency evacuations, and private medical treatment.

While Kiwis can access some public healthcare in Australia, travel insurance goes further - covering unexpected costs like ambulance fees, prescriptions, and hospital stays that are not fully covered.

The reciprocal health agreement won't help if your baggage goes missing, your trip is delayed, or you need to fly home early for an emergency.
